For two decades the Doctor Who Christmas special was a fixture of the festive TV schedule, and this guide gathers ten of the best from the modern era — from David Tennant's swashbuckling 2005 debut to Ncuti Gatwa's goblin-chasing arrival in 2023 (with a couple that technically landed on New Year's). U.S. streaming splits by era: the 2005–2022 specials are on AMC+ (also an add-on through Prime Video, Apple TV, and Roku), while "The Church on Ruby Road" (2023) is on Disney+. Since Rotten Tomatoes rarely scores these individually, ratings are each special's IMDb score. (U.S. availability current as of 2026.)

A note on a couple of these: "The End of Time" is a two-parter that aired across Christmas Day 2009 and New Year's Day 2010, and "Spyfall, Part 1" opened Series 12 on New Year's Day 2020 — both are festive specials in spirit even if they landed just after Christmas.

Episode Synopsis

The Christmas Invasion (2005)

The Tenth Doctor's debut, and he spends most of it unconscious, still recovering from his regeneration while the Sycorax hold Earth hostage on Christmas morning. Rose, Jackie, and Mickey are left to cope until the Doctor wakes for a swashbuckling rooftop finale. It cemented the Christmas special as a Doctor Who tradition and introduced David Tennant's beloved Tenth Doctor.

The Runaway Bride (2006)

Donna Noble is mysteriously teleported into the TARDIS mid-wedding, dragging the still-grieving Doctor into the schemes of the Empress of the Racnoss, who wants to wake her ancient brood beneath the Earth. Catherine Tate's first appearance leans hard into comedy, and sets up her return as a full companion in Series 4.

Voyage of the Damned (2007)

The TARDIS collides with a spaceship modeled on the Titanic, and the Doctor teams up with waitress Astrid (Kylie Minogue) to stop a sabotage plot and a swarm of murderous robotic "Host." Big, campy, and disaster-movie fun — it remains the most-watched modern Christmas special, and quietly introduces Wilfred Mott.

The End of Time, Parts 1 & 2 (2009–2010)

The Tenth Doctor's two-part farewell. The Master returns and remakes all of humanity in his own image while a far greater threat rises behind him, building to the Doctor's quiet, devastating sacrifice to save Wilf. Not especially Christmassy, but a hugely emotional send-off that regenerates Tennant into Matt Smith.

A Christmas Carol (2010)

Matt Smith's first festive special reworks Dickens across time: to save a crashing spaceship carrying Amy and Rory, the Doctor rewrites a lonely old miser's past, present, and future. Inventive, funny, and genuinely moving — it's frequently named the best of all the Christmas specials.

The Snowmen (2012)

Victorian London, an army of carnivorous snowmen, and a Doctor sulking in retirement until a sharp governess named Clara pulls him back into the fight. A snow-globe-pretty ghost story that introduces this incarnation of Clara and gives the Paternoster Gang one of their best outings.

Last Christmas (2014)

Dream Crabs trap the Doctor and Clara in nested, Inception-style dreams at an Arctic base, with Nick Frost's surprisingly perfect Santa as their guide. It blends Christmas whimsy with real Alien-inspired horror, and digs into the fractured trust between the Doctor and Clara.

Twice Upon a Time (2017)

Peter Capaldi's swan song, as the dying Twelfth Doctor meets the equally reluctant First Doctor (David Bradley) and neither wants to regenerate. A gentle, nostalgic, elegiac farewell — heavy on tissues — that hands the TARDIS to Jodie Whittaker.

Spyfall, Part 1 (2020)

A globe-trotting, James Bond–flavored Series 12 opener (aired New Year's Day) that throws the Thirteenth Doctor and her friends against alien infiltrators and a jaw-dropping returning enemy. Slick, cinematic event television rather than a cozy fireside Christmas tale.

The Church on Ruby Road (2023)

Ncuti Gatwa's first full adventure as the Fifteenth Doctor, meeting foundling Ruby Sunday amid a horde of mischievous, baby-stealing goblins — complete with a musical number. Bright, silly, and full of energy, it reboots the festive special for the show's new Disney+ era.
