The Big Bang Theory made four Halloween-themed episodes across its twelve seasons — a modest run, but each one leans into the gang's love of costume parties, comic-book-store bashes, and elaborately nerdy pranks. All four stream in the U.S. on HBO Max, which holds exclusive rights to the series, with individual episodes also available to rent or buy. Ratings are each episode's IMDb user score.

Episode Synopsis

The Middle-Earth Paradigm (Season 1, Episode 6)

The very first Halloween episode of the series. Penny throws a Halloween party and invites Leonard, Sheldon, Wolowitz, and Koothrappali, which turns into a real test of the guys' social skills outside their usual comfort zone. It's an early, low-key episode, before the show really found its footing.

The Good Guy Fluctuation (Season 5, Episode 7)

Leonard's relationship with Priya gets tested when an attractive comic book artist enters the picture, and things get complicated fast. Meanwhile Sheldon, in classic Sheldon fashion, sets out to scare his friends for Halloween using science instead of an actual costume. Critics were fairly mixed on this one at the time — some called it a solid, simple Halloween outing, others thought it felt like a leftover plot from earlier seasons.

The Holographic Excitation (Season 6, Episode 5)

Stuart throws his annual Halloween costume party at the comic book store, with Raj stepping in to help him plan it (partly because Raj has a soft spot for Stuart, partly because Stuart's parties tend to flop). Sheldon and Amy spend the episode negotiating their first couple's costume — they land on Raggedy Ann and a Raggedy C-3PO. Penny tries to show more interest in Leonard's physics work, and Howard, fresh off his trip to the International Space Station, can't stop bringing every conversation back to outer space, to the point where even a video message from Buzz Aldrin gets deployed to shut him up.

The Imitation Perturbation (Season 12, Episode 6)

Leonard and Penny host a Halloween party, and the costumes get personal fast: Howard shows up dressed as Sheldon, which stings more than he expected, and Sheldon plots retaliation. There's a side plot too, where Leonard is thrown off to learn that Penny doesn't actually remember their first kiss, which happened on a long-ago Halloween. It's a later-season episode, made when the show was juggling more relationship history to draw from.
