Across ten seasons, Friends made exactly one episode set on Halloween — "The One with the Halloween Party" — so this guide leads with that and adds two honorable mentions that regularly turn up on spooky-season rewatch lists for their costumes and scares (flagged as such in the synopses). All three stream in the U.S. on Max, the show's exclusive home. Ratings are each episode's IMDb user score.

Episode Synopsis

The One with the Halloween Party (Season 8, Episode 6) — the only genuine Halloween episode in the whole series. Monica and Chandler throw a last-minute costume party at their apartment, and things go sideways fast. Phoebe shows up as Supergirl, only for her evil twin sister Ursula to crash the party too, complicating Phoebe's crush on a guy there. Ross wears an elaborate, and frankly baffling, "Spudnik" costume (a potato-and-satellite mashup), Chandler goes as a pink bunny, Joey dresses up as Chandler, and a very pregnant Rachel skips costumes altogether. It aired November 1, 2001.

The One with the Holiday Armadillo (Season 7, Episode 10) — technically a Christmas episode, not Halloween, but it earns its spot on most "spooky season costume" lists because of the sheer weirdness of Ross's outfit. Ross is watching his son Ben over the holidays and wants to teach him about Hanukkah, but Ben only cares about Santa. Unable to rent a Santa suit this late in December, Ross improvises with a giant armadillo costume, inventing "Santa's Tex-Mex friend." Chaos escalates when Chandler shows up dressed as Santa and Joey arrives as Superman, and the three of them end up teaching Ben about Hanukkah together. A side plot follows Phoebe trying to sabotage Rachel and Joey's living situation so Rachel will move back in with her.

The One with Unagi (Season 6, Episode 17) — not Halloween either, but it's a favorite for the "prank and scare" crowd. After Phoebe and Rachel take a self-defense class, Ross tries to one-up their instructor by teaching them about "Unagi," a supposed state of total awareness that lets you sense danger from any direction. He spends much of the episode trying to sneak up on them to prove they don't actually have it, essentially turning the apartment into his own personal haunted house. Meanwhile, Chandler scrambles to make Monica a homemade Valentine's Day gift, and Joey hires a look-alike to help him scam a medical study for twins. It aired February 24, 2000.
